Walk It Off

Walk It Off

I’ve recently moved from New York City to Portland.  As you can imagine, this move has brought about many changes.  Of course, there are certain things that I miss dearly…my friends first and foremost, my favorite vegan restaurant, my favorite vegan bakery, Eric who cuts my hair, restaurants with delivery service, etc.  The most dramatic change has been the car culture.  My partner and I went full steam ahead and got a car upon arrival.  We have quickly assimilated our daily lives around using the car for EVERYTHING…work, shopping, errands, leisure.  It wasn’t until the other day that I was without wheels and decided to take a walk to do some errands while at work.  It was at that moment I realized how much I miss walking!  In New York we walk for everything….to the subway, from the subway, to the grocery store, to the dry cleaners, to work, to home, so on and so on.  I’ve now become so accustomed to using the car for such minor things that walking is no longer in my scope of exercise.  This short little trip to do errands awakened my love of walking.  Not only was I getting some much needed physical exercise but this little trip allowed me to take a moment and relax my mind, allowing me to  fully appreciate the beauty of Portland.
