Are Females the Greener Gender

I recently came across a blog on Gaiam.com by Alison Neumer Lara, republished with permission from Earth911, entitled: Are females really the greener gender? I thought it was relevant as we move into April and approach Earth Day, April 22.
The blog went into detail with specific numbers from studies boasting that women recycle more, have more interest in “living green,” eat less meat, take shorter trips (and save gas!) and make more eco-friendly purchases. The statistics were there, so I couldn’t really dispute them. However, I tend to relate these types of blog posts or news articles to my own family, as I hate to generalize, even if the numbers do back up the statements.I was not too surprised by these findings, especially as a mother myself who does most of our family shopping. At the time, there was something about finding out I was pregnant- carrying a little life inside of me- that made me stop in my tracks and really consider everything I was consuming or exposing myself and my unborn child to. And then, once he was here, watching him crawl on the grass and obsessing over whether it had recently been sprayed with chemicals or not. On the other hand, enjoying an apple from the Farmer’s Market clearly labeled “Grown locally and organically” immediately put my mind at ease.As I write this blog, the sun is shining for the first time in, I believe, 29 days. I know spring is in the air, because my allergies are in full bloom, just like the beautiful trees lining Naito Parkway along the river. I can’t completely agree with the blog by Ms. Lara, because I think here in Portland both men and women of all ages are aware of being green, eating local and organic, and treating their bodies and the earth with respect. Yet another reason to love PDX. Happy Spring!
